In December 2020, Shaping Futures, along with four of our university partners hosted Supporting Inclusive Transitions, a virtual CPD event for teachers and other practitioners working to support students with additional needs. The webinar featured talks on Mental Health and Resilience, Assistive Technology, Student Support at University and Disabled Students Allowance, as well a Student Panel. Although this event was initially aimed at teachers, the information it contains will be useful for students, parents and carers too!
Our Inclusive Transitions resources are designed to help students who feel they may need to access some additional support to make their Higher Education experience as successful as possible – whether that means accessing mentoring, assistive technology to support them with studying, supported accommodation, or adjustments in classes or assessments.
This resource covers the choices available to students, the ways they can study and how to research, apply and transition to their next stage of education. It will help help improve knowledge of the support available, how to access it and build confidence in reflecting on individual support needs and advocating for yourself.

This document outlines everything a parent or carer would need to know about our Inclusive Transitions resource.
Our Inclusive Transitions session informs students of the support available to them within Higher Education. This session is designed to be delivered to a classroom sized group before introducing them to the Inclusive Transitions resource above.
For students with limited knowledge on Higher Education, using our Myth Busting HE activity below beforehand would be suggested.
This session also includes notes on delivery and key messaging, to support anybody in delivering this session.
Our Higher Education Myth Busting session is a fantastic way to begin discussions around Higher Education. This activity is designed to introduce some of the concepts around Higher Education to students, with all slides prompting student discussion individually or within small groups.
This session is a pre cursor to launching the Inclusive Transitions pack with students, but it is suitable for all cohorts!
UCAS has specific resources for students with additional needs, on all stages of the Higher Education preparation and application process.
DSA can be a real lifeline for students with additional needs when studying, providing specialist equipment, non-medical helpers (e.g. BSL interpreter) or travel costs. The Government website provides an overview, but you can hear more about the DSA process in our webinars lower down this page.
